Happy 126th Birthday L.P. Grant Park

Welcome Eli Lilly and Company

There are a thousand ways to build esprit de corps among co-workers and build effective teams.  Many companies encourage employees to get involved in service projects with non profit organizations and also support corporate wide activities on an annual basis. The Conservancy welcomes many such groups each year and is working to expand the number of corporate groups that help in the park.

On Wednesday, May 20, Eli Lilly and Company sponsors a global day of service.  From the headquarters city of Indianapolis to Britain to Norway to Japan to Atlanta, Eli Lilly employees are engaged in “give back” activities.  We welcome 60 eager and energetic volunteers to Grant Park for a project cleaning up the bog garden.

Native Plant Rescue – May 31

A beautiful wooded area in suburbia is on the list to be cleared for a new subdivision.  Most of the tress will be clear cut and the plant material on the floor of the forest will be bulldozed and lost.  You can help save some of this native plant material by participating in our May 31 Native Plant Rescue.  We will relocate plants to the park where they will have better prospects for the future.  You might even find a plant or two for your own garden.  The rescue is the result of a partnership between the Conservancy and the Georgia Native Plant Society  http://www.gnps.org   A guide from the GNPS will lead the group.  Interested?  Pre-registration is required 404-521-0938 since group size is limited.  We will leave from the Conservancy office by 8:15 a.m. May 31 and car pool to the rescue site.

Outdoor Saturday Night Movie Returns to Summer Shade Festival

Attendees to the 7th Annual Summer Shade Festival will be in good hands on Saturday evening (Aug 29) when Allstate Insurance and agent Brian Pavlik (located on Memorial Dr. next to Tin Lizzy) sponsor a Saturday night family movie.  The Festival food, beverage and stages will remain open till 11:00 p.m.

Summer Shade Accepting A Few More Applications

The Summer Shade Festival continues to accept applications from artists, food vendors, musicians, etc.  Available slots are filling quickly as the number of applications is running ahead of last year.  In some cases we are taking “wait list” only.  Visit our website www.summershade.org for information on “How to Apply”.

Good Will Ambassadors Walk the Talk

In February the Conservancy Board of Directors voted to support a pilot initiative in Grant Park that places volunteer ambassadors in the park on weekends.  Similar to the ambassadors seen on downtown streets, volunteers in Grant Park will provide help to visitors by giving directions, answering questions, and interpreting park regulations.  Ambassadors will also help identify hazard situations, pick up trash, and generally keep watchful eyes on the park.

The initiative is led by the Grant Park Neighborhood Association with financial support from the Conservancy, Zoo Atlanta, GPNA.  The city of Atlanta is also supporting the program.  Do you want to be a Grant Park Ambassador?  You can call for more information 404-521-0938 or inquire via email to: parksandrecreation@gpna.org
